Debugging Thursday 7 April, 2005
A crappy morning extension of last night. I've set up another Tomcat host to use to debug this crap. I should have done this months ago, but didn't. It allows me to test rogue code without taking the commercial site up or down. No brainer. Still haven't figured out what's happening. Got to run some errands that I doubt I'll get to. Frustrated because with this debugging I'm not actually moving anything forward.
Update 11:24AM: The new host is working well. I can take it up and down and the main reger.com site stays up. Basic ops stuff, I know.
Update 12:10PM: Changed the one-word summary of today from "Crappy" to "Debugging".
Update 12:17PM: Actually seeing some progress. Able to identify problems and solve them today. Imagine that. Not having thousands of sites down when I test something out is a big plus.
Update 12:45PM: Hunter recommends Resin as an app server. As soon as I get everything settled here I'll check it out.
Update 1:46PM: I'm ready to try a built... yet again. You've heard this before, I know. I'll spare you the optimism. I expect full failure, outage, frustration and lots of F Bombs.
Update 1:58PM: Well, goddam! The thing seems to be working. Cross your fingers. Knock on wood. Tickle a midget. It seems to be working. I'm sure this is just the server teasing me and that it will now explode... physically... the first ever unprovoked server explosion.
Update 2:00PM: Still up. Amazing. Maybe I'm not as retarded as I've felt for the last 21 hours. Yes, it was 22 hours ago that I first began what I thought would be a quick deployment. In my own words from 5:02PM yesterday "Short site outage coming in a few minutes." Hah. Famous last words. Luckily the outage wasn't too long... about 15 minutes spread out over the last 24 hours, but that's not good enough.
I'm gonna watch it for a little while and then I have some errands I need to run. It'll be nice to get away from the computer.
Update 4:03PM: Back from running errands... the site's still up. Hot damn. Kroger for Altoids and nutrition bars. Chevron for gas. Embroid-me to pick up my tri suit, unembroidered. Screen printing place to drop off my tri suit to be screened. Home Depot to get some big cheap canvas painting drop cloths (9'x12'... two of 'em) to act as curtains in the 180 Room so that I can move my workspace down there. Going a little stir crazy upstairs.
Update 12:04AM: So there goes another one. Another day that is. Fit the general pattern of late. Morning optimism. Mid-morning issues. Afternoon rushing. Evening workout. Late evening with Heather. Late night work. Bed.
Not too shabby.
