Dom Finds DC Bloggers, Contemplates Connecting
Dominic recently
found some DC Bloggers:
I've discovered a wierd world of DC bloggers that both excites and confuses me. Do I dare enter the realm? As I think about it, the answer is clearly "not yet."
He's using this opportunity to eval his writing style:
That said, it's given me the opportuniy to rethink my content and the purpose of the site. Even as I read what I post, past the desire to capture my life in snippets, it seems boring. I tend just to write extemporaneously. Perhaps a little more forethought needs to go into it. Perhaps I'll start trying to develop my skills as a writer through my posts. Maybe I'll try being a little more creative. Mostly, I'll continue to try not to get fired.
Which is a good thing to do. In the last few weeks I've gotten a lot more aggressive with my promotion of datablogging on the site. What has for many years been a fairly personal site with some business stuff sprinkled in is becoming more of an even mix between the two. How do readers of joereger.com (whassup Mom!) feel about this? Will new readers who come to check up on datablogging be annoyed with the personal stuff?
Actually, I just launched a feature that Dom made me put on the list about a year ago that could help with this issue. The ability to run two completely separate sites from one account. On your reger.com control panel you have a Manage Sites button where you can create new sites and bounce between them.
Dom's had two sites for a while. A personal site and a business site. I think I'm gonna stick with the single site though. I am my business and my business am me... or something like that.
As for Dominic's writing style, I think it's great. While he says he needs more thought, in fact he's done quite a few insightful pieces over the years. And in blogging it's the extemporaneous stuff that communicates without words who you are. Ty[pos show that you're excited about somkething and ty[ping fast. People like blogs because they're not polished and perfect. They betray something more of who you are than just the words you say. Short, pithy posts just to give a quick update are important.
I think Dom would do just fine in the DC Blogs arena. Sure, he'll make some of the classic new blogger mistakes and get his ass flamed. And of course I'll cover it here and flame him even more. But that's all part of the process. I've tried not to push Dom with the blogging stuff. I learn too much watching him go from blogging-out-of-kindness-to-his-buddy-Joe to where he is today... just about to connect with the DC Bloggers.
Anyhow, good to see Dom out there blogging.
