It's 3:14AM and they've downgraded Katrina to a Cat 4 hurricane. They announced the downgrade about an hour ago. I'm up with legs that are getting sore... and some heavy thirst... so I turned on the tv to check on things.
Update 10:05AM: Storm is hitting shore. SuperDome's roof is leaking. Some portions of it are missing. Doh. New Orleans missed a direct hit and ended up on the west side of the storm. The west side is a little less intense. Overall my sense is that they're not seeing the drama they expected. Of course, they also haven't been able to get reporters out into the city. No reports regarding flooding or levees. I'm working now and have CNN on in the background.
Update 11:48AM: Generally seems that New Orleans was spared a disaster. By now we expected to see something. Overall though just media overhype... not much real disaster. I could be wrong... just a sense. Glad for the people of New Orleans.
Update 4:29PM: Here's cnn.com's summary:
Life-threatening flooding next fear
# Storm "dismantling" Gulfport, Mississippi, area # Katrina hit Mississippi 'like a ton of bricks" # Storm dropped to Category 1 with up to 95 mph winds # "Life-threatening storm surge flooding" occuring # "Total structural failure" in parts of New Orleans # East side of New Orleans under 5 to 6 feet of water
Update 7:54PM: The flooding is now the threat. Apparently widespread flooding and a number of folks in trouble. One section of New Orleans is under water.
