Conditions Worsen in New Orleans After Hurricane Katrina

From cnn.com:
Conditions worsen in New Orleans

# Looting and shootings reported in New Orleans
# Critical patients being airlifted, shelters being evacuated
# New Orleans mayor: Bodies being pushed to the side
# Coast Guard reserves mandatory call up ordered
# Mississippi flooding up to six miles inland
# "This is our tsunami," Biloxi Mayor

Ever since the "this is our tsunami" statement came out I've thought it was a little over the top. 260,000 people died in the tsunami. It's hard to discern what's media hype and what's really worse, but I will acknowledge that things are not well for the residents of New Orleans. Looting, bodies and flooding make for a rough week. Maybe I was a little premature in concluding that they dodged a bullet. Things could have been worse, as they usually can, but it looks like they're still pretty bad.

Heather called this morning as she was headed to Villa Rica to say that she saw about twelve Georgia Power trucks headed west, obviously to help out. Glad to see the people of Georgia helping out. I bet they get a tax break or some sort of federal funds. Which doesn't diminish what they're doing. I'm just saying that they likely get some sort of reimbursement.

The weather effect in Atlanta from Hurricane Katrina has been negligible. If it wasn't for the internet and television I wouldn't have known that there was much more than a strong thunder storm at play. The tornados never materialized over our house.

I wish the people of New Orleans, Mississippi and Alabama the best.
