Update 8:35AM: After all the head-to-brick-wall activity yesterday afternoon you'd think I was up against a large technical cahllenge. I solved it this morning off-handedly while in the basement waiting for Terp and Aves to come down. Lol! Always works out like that. Still some work to do to make sure having two Tomcats running under FireDaemon can eat twice the memory (a good thing).
We're headed out to Crescent Moon for some food. I'm looking forward to the coffee and AvaTime!
Update 8:41AM: Just did a quick verification and it is respecting the -Xmx256m startup switch... memory is reserved... that's a good thing.
Update 9:49AM: Back from Crescent Moon. Aves was a hit. I think every worker in the restaurant stopped by to grok the Aves! They were playing hide-and-seek from behind the counter. Everybody loves the Aves! I'm just duing some quick bike chain lube research... parafin or oil-based... that is the question.
Update 11:04AM: Back from the bike shop and Publix. Bought a lot of baby oatmeal. Aves slept while mom cut her finger and toe nails. I'm in the 180 Room now and I'm planning on implementing the Tomcat service thing so the sites may bump up and down for a little while.
Update 11:37AM: Trying to keep the downtime minimal. Backed up database in case of catastrophic error. Kept the old config in case things don't work out as planned. Documented my plan of action. Just about ready to get going with the switch.
Update 11:48AM: Switch took the sites down for something on the order of three minutes. Not bad. Tomcat instances now appear to be running under separate JVMs with separate memory spaces. Which is good because each JVM can only claim 1Gb on windows. We've got something like 6Gb of ram in the servers so only using 1Gb is a waste. For that matter only using 2Gb is still a waste, but 1/2 the waste of before. Hoping for better stability than before. We'll see. Any time you introduce a new element to a tech system you introduce new and unexpected issues.
Update 11:58AM: Updated the config on the HTTP status watcher. It restarts the Tomcat service when/if it goes down and pages me. It's the happy software that wakes me up at 3AM and causes a big "oh, jesus" exclamation, followed shortly by Terp saying "shhhh, you'll wake Aves," followed by a grumbling walk to the nearest computer to check things out. I had to change the config to restart the new service daemons separately.
Sorry for the technical divergence... on a Saturday! Definitely not heeding Lance's advice to relax on the weekend and not work! Now I'm off to help Terp with the Dean Realty website. Which is work, but it's for Terp so it's not really work. After that I need to maintain my bike a bit for the 3 Gap Time Trial tomorrow... new red bar tape in the hizzle! And some new, hopefully cleaner, chain lube... that last stuff I got was liquid dirt magnet.
Update 7:23PM: Went out to Villa Rica to check out the revamped Dean Realty digs. Nice! Spent some time talking about the web site. Went out to eat at Covalli's and had some baked ziti. Drove back and stopped at Publix. Home now and ready to head upstairs to watch some TV with Terp and Aves until they go sleepy sleep.
Update 10:50PM: Watched some Military Channel specials about the Roman Empire. Aves and Terp fell asleep. I packed up the minivan for tomorrow's ride... getting up early. I'd like to head to sleep but I'm not sleepy so I doubt it makes much sense to go to bed yet. Probably read some of the Wired Magazine issue that came today... saw an article about string theory. Server seems to be doing well... still waiting for that big gotcha to rear its ugly head but thus far no signs of him. Over and out all!
