Sunday, September 3, 2006 - Family Time, BBQ and Playing Possum

Sunday around the house. Only thing on our plate, per se, is a trip to a BBQ restaurant. We watched American Eats last night on the History Channel and it was about the history of BBQ. So we're up for it.
Took some video of Aves walking. Need to get some walking pics onto the site. Maybe a stroll around the neighborhood. Heather's folding clothes while I watch Aves.
Update 10:55AM: I took the littles out for a stroll with some good hills. Got the blood flowing in the legs to flush out some of the waste products from yesterday. Built up a bit of a sweat. Aves slept.
Update 11:12AM: Did a little research and found these BBQ joints in town (and relatively close to our home):
Slopes Sandy Springs - 200 Johnson Freey Rd, Sandy Springs, GA 30328 Smokey Bones - 1555 Pleasant Hill Rd, Duluth, GA 30096 Dreamland Peachtree Corners - 5250 Peachtree Parkway, Norcross, GA 30092 Pig-n-Chick - 4920 Roswell Rd, Fountain Oaks Shopping Center Famous Dave's Snellville - 3868 Stone Mountain Highway, Snellville, GA 30039 Fat Matt's Rib Shack - 1811 Piedmont Rd NE, Atlanta, GA 30324
There are certainly a lot more out there. These are generally the Big Name BBQ joints in town. We've been to all but Famous Dave's. My fave is Dreamland so I'll push that boat in the vote. Anybody know of any hole-in-the-wall places with great food? I like the pulled pork sandwiches with some fries and bread.
One interesting thing we learned last night is that there are four general types of BBQ, each named for their geographical area of birth. Texas, North Carolina, Kansas City and Memphis. While I would have never noticed it yesterday, many of the BBQ listings in town tell you what they're good at... for example "if you like Texas-style BBQ" or "Memphis-style barbecue, featuring ribs rubbed with a dry." Last night while we watched the show I thought that the local restaurants either never mentioned it or were all the same type (assumed North Carolina). Not so pancho.
Update 11:21AM: NASCAR racing tonight?
Update 11:22AM: Yep, NASCAR at 7PM tonight, from California. BBQ, NASCAR, sleepin' in... it's just a good ol' southern Sunday... minus the trip to church. Another funny thing from the tv show on BBQ last night was a classic place up north where when you walk in the door they say in a loud, aggressive voice "what can I get for you today?" Funny when juxtaposed against The Varsity's "whattya have?"
Update 9:25PM: Watching NASCAR and I look up to see Bug dropping a dead baby possum on the front hall. Idiot. I put Bug into his cage and as I'm tracking down something to put the possum into it stops playing dead and wanders down the hall. I brushed it outside the front door with a broom where it continues to play dead. Some blood on the floor, who knows if it'll make it. Bug's now in his cage and he's drooling as if he has rabies. Idiot. The thing that pisses me off is that Ava walks and crawls up and down that hallway. Now she can't... at least for a while. I used Clorox cleaner and then followed with an antiseptic second coat.
Anybody want three stupid red dogs? Not house trained. Real cheap.
Update 9:43PM: Possum apears OK. He stopped playing dead and crawled up onto the handrail on the front porch... who knew these things could climb? He's now sitting there, looking scared. My guess is waiting for his mother, although Heather scoffs at such a bleeding-heart theory... "he's a teenager possum, not a baby," she says as she mimes the size of a baby vs. his size. Stupid Bug.
