Just got this email from Dan Moss who I had previously blogged won the Gulf Coast Triathlon:
Thank you so much for your support. I am writing to let everyone know after all I will be second place overall and no longer the overall winner of Gulf Coast Triathlon. The penalty that Mike Neill received was questionable as it was called an improper bike rack. It was said that his bike was racked on the wrong side of the rack after he left transition to go for the run. However, my girlfriend has a picture of me in transition from the bike to the run that shows his bike properly racked! So when I was looking through those photos on Sunday morning on her camera I noticed this. I couldn't believe it. That means somehow in the time after he and I put our bikes in transition to head out for the run and the time we got back into transition after the race to gather our things, it got moved. So last night I decided to email the Head Race Official when I got back and let him know what I saw. It seems they are going to overturn the results in Mike's favor as he was emailing the officials as well about the results. Mike and I have been in contact about this already.
I am still quite pleased with my result because Mike beat me by 7+ minutes last year and this year it was only 90 something seconds. I will post a race summary eventually, but I just thought you all should know this when you look at the results when they get updated.
I have no idea what they will do with the prize money now, but "drinks on me" will have to be put on hold for a bit :-)
This proves something anybody who knows Dan already knew. That he's a class act. It takes maturity and integrity to actively advocate for fairness in competition like this. I applaud Dan. In my book he won the day!
