Joe's Personal Social Media Plans for 2010

I've been at this blogging thing for about a decade, give or take. What's on tap for 2010?

Life capture. This was my original goal, long before the word blog even existed. I wanted to capture my life so that I could remember it later on. To do this I actually have to make updates about my life. I think I'm stuck between phases. In the beginning it was a lot of fart jokes and self-depracation. Now I want to discuss insights and help people with a more mature view. But changing my voice is taking some time. It requires more investment. What's interesting is that the old phase and the new phase both rely on the same substrate... the experiences in my life... but express my experiences differently.

More video blogging. I'm really digging the Flip camera and video blogging. It's probably more for me than anything... I like having all of the vids nicely organized online and viewable from anywhere.

Less pushy. Last year I really invested in connecting all of my stuff. Blog posts flowing to Facebook. Twitter updates flying to 30+ social media sites. Pictures uploaded to the blog *and* Facebook. It got too big. I started to feel like I was intruding on my friends with all of my stuff. I create a ton of content but let's face it... most is crap and nobody needs to waste their time with it. I experiment because it's my job. Pushing it out into my friends' space isn't the right thing to do. When I decoupled things a bit late in 09 I felt like I had a better balance of push vs. pull going on. People who want to see a bunch of stuff about me can head to joereger.com, as always... what up mom!?! Btw, the counter to this argument is that Facebook has the algorithms and features in place to let my friends decide how much of me they want to see.

More focusing. Despite frequently advising clients that they need focused content, I am a shotgun of concepts. Life, fitness, family, technology... all wrapped into one unfocused mess of a blog. This year I'm going to invest in a consulting co blog and a few other projects with a specific focus. Eating my own dog food.

Better stuff. I used to spend some time, you know, thinking through what I blogged. With two kiddos and an out-of-control business (out-of-control not making money, that is) I often had to phone-in the blogging. It often boiled down to a bajillion workout updates and that's all. I'd like to carve out an hour or so each week to reflect and blog. Pipe dream, of course... but maybe it'll motivate me to do some better blogging.

Interviews. I get to meet a lot of awesome people and I need to get better about sitting down with them for an hour interview every now and then.

Linked In. In 2010 I'll figure out why this thing exists and why we keep accepting friend requests inside of it. Not.
