Trip to San Antonio

Rob, Joe E, Marti and I headed to San
Antonio to a technology conference today.

We flew out of Atlanta at about 11:20AM.
With only a few evening business
requirements we had some spare time to
burn. So we headed to the Alamo.

The Alamo is a building. It is old. The
entire city of San Antonio appears to be
built around it. We were amazed at how
much of a tourist town this place is.

There was a news crew at the Alamo. I
offered them digital camera support,
completely ignoring the fact that they had
a huge professional broadcast-quality
camera right in front of me. The talking
head TV personality pointed that out to me
so I offered to be the stunt man for the
shots.

He said that the only way that I'd get on
TV is if I jumped off of the Alamo. It's
not very high, but high enough to hurt.

I declined.

We ate dinner at the Steers & Beers
restaurant. Not what we expected. Average
cuisine.

I then went to the hotel workout room for a
quick stairmaster and bike ride.

We got up, ate breakfast and started the
business conference thing.

Louie Andersen opened the conference with
some comedy. Pretty funny.

The conference is organized like most with
interest-specific break out sessions of
your choice. I went to three and two were
very good.

For dinner we went to the "Fiesta." It's
an eight day festival in San Antonio. We
have no idea why. I was forced to drink two
shots of tequila.

The Joe-E-Official-Drink-Count was up to 14
for the trip. A few hours later Joe E
found himself in the back of a police car.

After dinner we went to a sports bar to
watch the Spurs in their playoff game. It
was a very sparse place with a lot of local
culture. Not very "sportsbarish".

Oh, and the police car that Joe E was
riding in was actually a decommissioned
police car being used as a taxi. They had
the rammer on the front but declined to ram
anything, despite a few recommendations.

The next day we attended the conference and
worked hard. We went to a NetASPx
lunch/pitch. We went to a lot of technical
sessions.

At night Lawson brought KC and the Sunshine
Band to a dude ranch for us. It was about
an hour outside of San Antonio. They had
armadillo races, hot air balloons, a real
rodeo and some velcro walls.

The next day I was a little slower than
usual. I attended the conference which
ended at 12:00.

Our flight was at 5:30PM so we had some
time to burn. We went to Dick's Last
Resort. It's a restaurant where they
insult the customers.

It was early and there was no alcohol so
their insults were tame.

At one point he asked me "Where are you
guys from?"

"Atlanta," I said.

"Oh yeah, my mom lives in Smyrna, just
outside of Atlanta," he said.

"Yeah, I used to live there until your mom
moved in," I replied.

Good times.

Joe Elswick had a number of names
throughout the meal.

After the lunch we still had a lot of time
to burn so we headed to The Tower. It's
like the space needle. About 700-800 feet
tall. Restaurant on top.

So we ate again. Not thirty minutes after
our first lunch.

Made it to the airport very very early.

On the plane I talked to a lady from the
Lawson conference. We had a good flight.

Joe Elswick had a rough flight. Nuff said.

He had an even rougher tram ride from the
terminal to the baggage claim. Nuff said.

Good trip. Very productive and fun at the
same time.
