Weekend Project: Fluorescent Green Living Room

I took on one home project this weekend: I
painted the living room fluorescent green.
It looks great. It adds some excitement to
the room. It's a risky color. Without the
proper support from the accessories it can
flop. But with the correct attention to
detail it is perfect.

I accented it with a dark fudge brown.
This strong color creates focal points
throughout the room to distract the eye
from the bright and potentially
overwhelming green. To get the brown into
the room I made a 5 inch frame for a
painting. And I made three wooden candle
holders... basically glorified 4x4's with
holes in the top.

I also added gold stars to the ceiling. I
made my own stencil and have mixed emotions
about the final result. They may make the
room look a little too childish. The color
already threatens in that direction... the
stars may push the room over the cliff.
I'll give them some time. It may be that
I'm just focusing on them too much right
now.

I started this redesign on Sunday at about
10:00AM. I simply decided that this was
the project of the weekend and went for
it. A trip to Lowe's was my first
activity. I proceeded to purchase 5
gallons of fluorescent green paint. Too
bad I only needed two. I didn't account
for the fact that the living room has a lot
of windows. At Lowe's I learned that the
eggshell finish causes the color to
change. I wouldn't accept the color after
they mixed it. That wasted 5 gallons for
them. I settled on a semi-gloss finish.
If I were to go only for the look, I'd
choose flat, but I had to be a little
practical. You can clean a semi-gloss
finish.

Taping and trimming the room was hideous.
I hate this part of the painting process.
It took about 4 hours to complete. With it
done, I could slam the green onto the walls.

Halfway through the painting I was
nervous. The green looked splotchy. It
looked out of place. It looked like a
banana.

Later that night, with the tape removed and
the lighting just right I realized that
it's exactly what I wanted.

The frame was the most delicate piece of
work. I used my dado blade for the first
time to trim the frame. Monday night found
me finally using the fudge paint on it.

One room down... what's next?
