Another Bug Upgrade to Qlogger
12
Hour
0
Minute
PMThe upgrade is done. Three more weeks of
night-time and weekend code is running
Qlogger.com.

The latest changes were an upgrade to the
template engine that I launched a month
ago. Massive changes were made in that
build to separate all screen output and
business logic into self-contained
functions.

The build today refined the screen-level
output by removing table background colors,
font colors and giving control to client-
side css stylesheets.

The downside of such massive changes is
that I had to reset many user templates to
one of the defaults. I tried and tried to
avoid it, but in the end a move forward for
the architecture demanded it.

The new engine has a much cleaner
separation of front-end from back-end.
This allows everybody to create their own
crazy templates and really control the way
that their site looks.

In addition to the new engine I launched 32
new templates! Yeah, 32. Lots work.

It's 1:24PM. I've been working on qlogger
since 7:00AM. I've been very tense all
day. I've been implementing the build plan
below.

It's good to have the build out of the
way. Now I have to monitor the server for
crashes and listen to what users have to
say about the new changes.

It's happy hour somewhere in the world...
who wants a beer?

-------Build Plan----------

1) Notify our excellent users via email
that "In three days we'll be upgrading your
logging tool." - Done 11/20/2002

2) Content required: news.qlogger.com --
> "Upgrade Notice" summary - Done 11/20/2002

3) Backup all production data and transfer
locally for safe storage

4) Backup production codebase, images, user
images, etc. and transfer locally for safe
storage

5) On local instance Template table delete
all but templates built to new scheme

6) Enter valid template names/authors on
local instance

7) Create map of old templateid's to new
ones. For example:
1-512 --> 1
any templateid of 5 --
> 6
654,897,1245 --> 1

8) Export local Template table for transfer
to production

9) Add new log stats fields to userlog table

10) UPDATE userlog SET logviewsrecent='0',
logviewstotal='0', logviewsadmin='0'

11) Create a build zip. Careful to remove
local instance database files.

12) In production apply map of old-->new
templateid's to quser table

13) Update all user's calendars to 'small'
in quser table

14) Empty current Template table in
production.

15) Import Template table from local to
production

16) Do production codebase build

17) Test. Test. Test. Implement backout
plan if necessary.

18) Remove unused quser fields.

19) Remove unused template fields.

20) Create template preview thumbnails

21) Upload thumbnails to production

22) Add thumbnail names to templates table

23) Update news.qlogger.com

24) Monitor server for errors, rest and
bask in the excellent new features launched.
