Chattahoochee Road Runner's 10K Race Results

Alrighty! Done with the race!

Final time: 39:00!

Better than I had expected. Still lots of
room for improvement.

Mile 0-1: At mile 1 I felt good but worried
that my pace was too fast. I was getting
into a comfortable breathing rhythm.
Lots of fast dudes around but I was keeping
up. I didn't hear the split time which may
have hurt me a little.

Miles 1-3: During miles 1-3 I started to
worry more about my pace. I thought that I
had shot out too fast and that I was
slowing. I assumed that I was well below the
pace I wanted. I was getting a little
discouraged. I was with a big pack for a
while but got dropped and found myself
running in a 10 meter gap with people chasing
me from behind. But at mile 3 I got the
split of 18:30 which was OK. I realized that
I was a little slower than I wanted and that
I could maintain where I was at. I
wonder if I would have been more motivated in
mile 1-2 if I had heard the first split.

Mile 3-4: Good mile. Maintained pace. Split
at 4 was 24:36. A six minute mile. Starting
to fatigue. Hille from about 3.75
to 5 miles. So I was in for a push. Watched
my breathing and pushed.

Mile 4-6.2: The big hill was painful. Took a
good bit out of me. I tried to rubber band
myself mentally to a group. It
helped me up. At mile five there was no
split time but I was a little recovered for
the race to the finish. I started to
stride out a little more. Gave it what I
had. They changed the end of the course,
which threw me a little. I had the race
in my mind and wasn't in the mood for a
change. I should have checked the finish
before starting. My bad. Small hill at the
end. Final time was 39:00..

I ran the course in January at 40:30 so this
is an improvement of a couple minutes. Can't
complain with that.

I was very worried about the tapering I had
done. I felt so lazy backing off of the
workouts over the last two weeks. My
joints started to hurt. Going into the race,
because tapering was so new to me, I didn't
know if I could race the full
distance without joint pain. I just jad an
irrational fear that I'd blow up. Sure, I
had been doing 8 mile runs every day
for weeks. I just didn't feel good about the
taper.

But at the race I had no knee pain. No back
pain. No neck pain. No shoulder pain. I
was just able to run. Very happy about
this.

I also took the time (for the first time) to
warm up before the race. I ran for about 10
minutes at slow pace and then did
some pickups to stretch the legs out. I need
to remember to do this at all future races.

And I stretched a lot this morning before
driving to the race and at the race. Gotta
do that too.

Running in the rain was great. I thought that
I'd slip. I didn't. I slip when I
accelerate into intervals. In a race I'm
trying to maintain a base pace so there was
no acceleration. The rain was amazing. Temp
was perfect. I loved the
environment of this race. My favorite run to
date.

My first time upping and then lowering pace
in a race. I wanted to catch a group to use
them as motivation. I accelerated...
got the heart rate through the roof, caught
them and then slowed down. This is
important. I've got to be able to implement
strategies in races. Control pace.

I didn't wear my heart rate monitor for the
first workout in, what... six months. Didn't
want the distraction. What a great
decision. Sure, I'd love to know right now
what my heart rate was like. I'd love to
compare it to the 40:30 run over the same
course. But it's just a distraction. Not
worth having in a race.

Heather and Rusty finished in 50:48.
Excellent job guys!

After the run Heather had a hair appointment.
Beep, Ball, Rusty and I went to IHOP for
some carbs. And then Rusty and I went
to Phiddipedes to check out some racing
flats. I had hoped that they wouldn't make a
difference but I tried them on and
they're damn light. I can see how they'd
help. Not sure how much... but they'd help.
May look into getting a pair.

Fun day. Fun race.
