2005 St. Anthony's Triathlon - 2:18:55

Race is over. Beat last year's time and actually ended up only a little above "Best Possible."

Out of the water I was in the "I Suck" time bracket. I thought I was fast but when I looked at my watch I was at 30min!?!? Slower than last year. I heard this theme from a number of folks. We felt fast but were slow. Current issue?

I stayed calm on the bike and kept my heart at 160bpm, almost exclusively. Higher cadence than normal. I found myself passing folks.

I didn't get thrashed like I figured I would. Certainly there were dudes passing me by quickly, but not as many as I thought there would be.

I tried to be smart on the bike... fast but not overly so. My left butt muscle got tight/sore. Which is odd because it did the same thing last year.

I came out of T2 in 1:38. I knew that a 40 min 10K would do 2:18 but i wasn't sure if I could do it. By mile 1 I had tied myself to a 16 year old turning a fast pace. We passed a ton of folks. By mile two I had dropped him and continued to pass people. Amazingly, my legs felt great and I just knocked people off one at a time, each one a mini-goal. Only got passed a few times on the run. Felt strong.

The temperature was amazing. Cool, near ideal for me.

I finished in 2:18:55. Official may be a tick or two above 2:19. Unlike last year, I felt great afterwards. I didn't overhydrate. I didn't over-goo. I ate what I needed and sipped some fluid. Two gels on the bike. Some powerade on the bike. One gel on the run. That's it. No bloating.

Saw everybody at the start. Heard a few people immediately after getting out of the water. Saw Heather right after getting on the bike. Heard somebody dismounting from the bike. Saw everybody at the end. Great support.

Met up with Heather, Beep, Ball, my father after the race. Dana showed up, unexpectedly! Then I found Keith, Carlos, Vanessa, Jodi and Brian. Didn't see Joel or Anna after the race, but I heard they finished and did great! J.T., from the hotel, turned out a 2:17 race... nice!

So now I'm back in the hotel room. Beer o'clock. Pics shortly! Thanks to everybody who wished me luck and supported me!

Update 6:13PM: Just got my results:

22 207 Joe Reger 30 Atlanta GA 72 29:46 1:36 27 1:06:05 1:34 9 39:52 22 2:18:52

22nd place in my age group out of 230. 207th overall out of, I don't know, 3000. 72nd out of 230 on the swim in my age group. 27th out of 230 on the bike in my age group. 9th out of 230 on the run in my age group. Surprised that I ran a 39:52 10K after hitting it hard on the swim and bike. Dropped my transition time in T1 by 30 seconds... not bad. About the same transition time on T2.

Update: I figured out that the 16 year old I was running with was Sam Schildgen. He won the 15-19 age group with a time of 2:04:26. His run was 20 seconds slower than mine, but he clobbered me on everything else, mostly the swim. He's on the Aegis Junior Pro team.
