05:47:54 AM: Morning! Terp and Ava were sniffling last night so I slept in the Wog Wing and I'm hoping I dodged the viral bullet. We'll see.
08:13:58 AM: Out of the pool. Nice 1hr swim with quick breaks on the 15 min. Jack was there lapping me like it was goin' out of style. He's already looking fast this season. LRVSD was there so I opted out of the locker room change and went into some ab work. Headed to pick up Marc and Dana now. We really lucked out with this weather. Sufferfest 07: in progress!
01:14:43 PM: Late start. At 36 miles. Just hit a wall of wind a few miles ago... super strong wind. Beautiful day out!
09:29:29 PM: Back home. Sufferfest 07 Day 1 was a success.
Wind advisory was a bitch. Massive wind out there. Fun downwind. Slow and painful upwind. Pushed us out of our base zone a bit but we all shared the load well. Music played and we worked. Caught the checkout woman at the convenience store checking out my spandexed package. Props to me. Final time for the ride was 6hr13min at 103 miles (I think). I got us lost once near the end and it cost Dana a flat. Sorry guys.
Quick 15 minute run afterward and the legs felt good.
Carpooling in the minivan works very well. We'll shift the Panera start to 8am tomorrow and eat on the road to gain some time.
Afterwards we met Leslie, Aidan, Terp and Ava at Los Hermanos and ate some mexican. Aidan is getting so vocal. He demanded to be allowed to pile his cheerios... and then ate them. He and Aves are getting to know each other. They're just cute together.
Hoping to get a good night's sleep before Day 2... Taylorsville loop at the end of The Comet plus some Comet miles equals 108ish miles. Hoping there's less wind.
Over and out.
Dana's take on it:
Felt pretty good this morning. Organized and ready for Joe to pick me up but the kid’s school bus never came (sometimes there are subs for the drivers who are not familiar with the routes…nice I know). Pinged Joe so he could get Marc first. A quick fly by the highschool. Then the elementary school. Then back to the house to throw the gear in the Reger ride and off we went. Breakfast at Panera. Then off to the start of the Serrano course.
The weather was unbelievable….until the wind. The sunny warm weather was deceiving when it came time to ride. The wind was relentless. We took turns pulling but we worked harder than we had wanted. There were times when I had to use all my weight to lean into the wind to keep the bike upright. I was thankful though that it wasn’t bitter cold! I flatted at mile 80 something or another. Joe was kind enough to change it. Then off we went to knock out the rest. No other problems. We have a great support system. It’s nice to be able to work as a team. We share the workload (for the most part, I might steal more draft but who’s counting?!) We remind each other to eat and drink and we laugh alot. We’re looking forward to our weekend rides so we can hook up with our other peeps.
Total miles: 103 give or take. We heard on the radio or GPS or something that there was a friggin wind advisory in effect in that area. Nice.
Tomorrow we’ll do Taylorsville. One day down, three to go!
And Marc's:
Serrano Ride - 102 miles, 6 hours 13 min, 6114 calories burned, avg heart rate 137. Very windy, sunny, fun, 1 wrong turn, Dana got a flat at mile 91.
Average heart rate of 125 on average power of 201 watts. But I don't buy it. The Polar power meter wasn't reflecting power output accurately... underestimating it in the high-wind conditions.
