30 Min Morning Swim, 15 Mile Evening Run
Water. Stroking. What else could you possibly want in the morning? Did a little hot tub stretching of the leg sticks. Almost zero gas in the tank today but I want to maintain the consistency. This is where recent workout momentum and the desire to not break it carries me to the workout venue. On the plan is a two hour recovery ride today. But I haven't done a big run since last Wednesday so I'm thinking run.
08:48:34 PM: Actually made it out for the run tonight. Didn't have much of a plan. Wore the new shoes. Felt good, no issues. Opted out of wearing the new Amphipod hydration belt... carryover from skydiving: never wear two new pieces of gear on a jump.
Comet, started at mile 1.2, ran towards 0.0 and then back out. Heart rate was high. Pace was a little high but not much higher than what I've been doing at 130bpm. Saw a few 160bpms and forced myself to slow down. Legs weren't fresh but something in the head makes me go to a higher bpm.
I've noticed this before. Heart Rate Zone Momentum (HRZM) is what I'll call it. If you work out at 120bpm then that's where you'll naturally settle on the next workout. But if you up it to 160bpm then you'll naturally settle there for your next workout. Not scientific, lots of exceptions. But some validity. Possibly something to do with the happy-brain chemicals that come out to fight pain. Am I an addict?
After three miles my heart rate had settled. Still about ten beats higher than recent runs. I started turning out some 8's and held that until mile 10 at which point I slowed down to some 9's, 9:15's as I got dehydrated. With the Depot at 4.2 (5.4 mi into my run) I had to go seven miles before my next drink. This is what I get for not planning my run out.
Also, only had three gel packets. One per half hour. Some salt tabs. Once I got a drink I was able to pick it back up to 8:40's and then a couple cooldown miles to finish.
Good run. Average heart rate was around 140bpm, a little higher than the 130bpm lately but a good run all the same.
