Brain Development vs. Sleeping Position
I was thinking today about brain development. The brain grows a lot from birth to age, say, seven. Brain growth is certainly somewhat affected by blood delivery. Blood delivers oxygen and nutrients. Blood flow is certainly somewhat affected by position of the head in a gravity field.
In the last generation we've seen the recommended baby sleeping position go from face down to face up. This changes the blood flow patterns in the brain for a significant portion of the baby's development.
Have studies been done on this? I know that face up dramatically decreased likelihood of SIDS. I'm not disputing the decision to keep babies face up. I'm just wondering what other effects are.
At the back of the head is the more reptilian brain... the evolutionarily older stuff. The heart and lung control. Reflexes. Balance.
At the front of the head is the cortex where advanced human thinking develops. Intelligence. Memory, etc.
It stands to reason that if you change blood flow to increase delivery in the older parts of the brain you could affect childhood brain development, no? Is the increase in violence we see in society in some way attributable to this?
I have no idea. Just posing the question. I spend a lot of time thinking about Ava's brain development.
