Date: 2008-12-07 12:13:57 Name: Joe Reger Hi Heather! Always synthetic layers in winter. Cotton collects sweat and will leave you freezing if you have to stop with a flat, etc. Just layering on the top is easy because you've got running gear. You need a pair of gloves... how big and warm depends on the temp... most cyclists have two pairs... one fairly thin pair and one winter bulky for 30 degree days. Keep your toes warm with shoe covers... essentially neoprene booties that go over your cycling shoes. I also use chemical foot warmers with mixed results... sometimes they don't get enough oxygen to warm up... had that problem on last ride. For legs there are cycling tights that generally come in two thicknesses... thin and thicker. A lot of it is just trial and error. Riding and seeing what's not comfortable. I generally opt for more than I think I need because I can always unzip a top or remove a layer. The windchill is significant and magnifies the cold a lot. From Entry: Silk Sheets Ride: 32 Mi

Date: 2008-10-14 09:15:06 Name: Sarah After my treadmill malfunction in South Africa, I stopped looking at my watch during recovery runs. I used to check every mile to be sure I was running my recovery 'pace', however after my treadmill experience, I run them on feel. Turns out my pace is about :30/mile faster, with no ill effects and still allowing ample recovery. Go figure! From Entry: 45 Min Swim, 1Hr @ 9mph: Zero Expectations
|
Date: 2008-10-12 09:51:48 Name: Lucho Joe- The low expectations you place on your runs are a mental game that you play with yourself to counter your fear. By having low expectations there is less risk of failure, so there's nothing to be afraid of and your brain doesn't release stress hormones. When your expectations are high then there is more risk of failure (and success) and you get stressed which releases hormones. This is the "fear of success" theory in sports psychology. Going in to workouts with zero expectations counters both of these thought processes. Zero expectations allow you more readily to listen to your body and get the most out of the session. You should also consider how you define success and failure of a workout. If you plan to run at 8:00 pace and are too tired to achieve this- the workout may still be very successful in terms of moving towards your goal. Just because the number on the watch isn't up to your expectations, the effort may be. Your muscles don't care what the number on the watch is- they only care about how hard they work. Fatigue can make 8:30 pace just as effective in building fitness as 8:00 pace can when you're more rested. The same thing with HR. What happens with athletes is that they condition and teach themselves how to perceive their objective data (watts, HR, pace), the brains perception and preconditioned response to the number THEN determines how they feel. If you are intimidated by 7:30 pace, when you see it on your watch it will trigger fear, THEN you will feel tired, even if you felt great up to that point. Hormone release triggered by brain response to seeing a stimulus that you have taught yourself to fear... Ie: A small child doesn't fear a tiger until he learns to. When he first sees the tiger he is calm and laughing and wants to pet the tiger... once he learns what it actually is, seeing the tiger will trigger adrenaline, norepinephrine and cortisol release causing elevated HR and the fight or flight mechanism (fear). Bad analogy- but it gets the point across. When you look at your watch or power meter and your expectations are not met- the number may as well be a tiger.. Figure out how to shift this thinking away from expectation and more towards allowing your body to do what it can. Sorry to pop in and give unsolicited advice... this subject is currently the only thing that I myself am focused on. I see this response in nearly every athlete out there! The athletes that you don't see this response in are the ones who won Kona yesterday. They're the ones who break world records. The brain is 100% in control of how your body functions on race day... every small movement and decision starts in the brain. Your brain tells you how your legs feel, not the other way around. Date: 2008-09-14 05:33:09 Name: Joe Reger That's what normally happens to me (although I don't get below 1:15!) I start out fast and fade. What was odd about this workout was that I went as hard as I could but was only able to do 1:30 in the beginning. I thought I'd slow to 1:40's but was able to just keep chugging along at 1:30. And despite tiring a good bit I somehow went a little faster at the end. I must have worked harder but my perception was that I was working just as hard the entire time. At this point in the season I'm good at going one speed. Over the next few weeks I'll add some range and hopefully see more 1:20 action. From Entry: 30 Min Swim: 10x100y on 2Min

Apparently Lance Armstrong is coming out of retirement for Tour...
AUSTIN, Texas — Lance Armstrong is getting back on his bike, determined to win an eighth Tour de France. Armstrong's return from cancer to win the Tour a record seven consecutive times made him a hero to cancer patients worldwide and elevated cycling to an unprecedented level in America.
The 36-year-old Armstrong told Vanity Fair in an exclusive interview posted on its Web site Tuesday that he was inspired to return after finishing second last month in the Leadville 100, a lung-searing 100-mile mountain bike race through the Colorado Rockies.
"This kind of obscure bike race, totally kick-started my engine," he told the magazine. "I'm going to try and win an eighth Tour de France."
The sport and particularly the Tour have missed his star power, even though skeptics refused to believe he could win 7 Tours without the help of illegal performance-enhancing drugs.
The 2009 Tour "is the intention," Armstrong's spokesman Mark Higgins told The Associated Press, "but we've got some homework to do over there."
Tour director Christian Prudhomme did not return messages seeking comment on Armstrong's decision. His staff said he would not comment before Wednesday morning, if at all.
Armstrong's close friend and longtime team director, Johan Bruyneel, now with team Astana, sent a text message to an AP reporter in Paris saying he did not want to comment now.
In a video statement on his foundation's Web site, Armstrong said details _ such as a team and schedule _ will be announced Sept. 24 at the Clinton Global Initiative in New York City.
