You have AIDS ! (After Ironman Depression Syndrome) at least that is what Matt calls it. I have had it for 2 years now, thus my inability to get motivated to race (i mean train) again. But you do them every year. Do you get this down after IMFL ? Hope you cheer up soon.

Interesting Thought.. The only problem I see is the race could turn into an expensive training day. But you perform well under pressure and lets hope you don't have to run down somebody to podium. Best of luck mate!!

I was about to mention reservatrol but saw that Peter beat me to it. Even if you are avoiding alcohol, you can obtain resveratrol from other sources, such as muscadine grapes (currently available at Kroger and Dekalb farmers market), pomegranate, blueberries, peanuts, and also in supplement form. Fresh beets are a great source of antioxidants. Sardines in olive oil are a great source of protein, iron and omega fatty acids while being free of the harmful contamination found in some of the larger variety of fish. From my reading of the health benefits of wine, timing intake in conjunction with meals, especially meals containing red meats, appears to increase the beneficial affects, apparently by interacting with the meat during digestion. I'm driving up to Louisville to cheer on Danielle, Keith, Bob and Sue. I did not realize you were doing that one, but I'll be cheering for you as well, Joe!

Hmmm...Aside from caloric intake there is another thought about the key to longevity called resveratrol. It's found in my favorite beverage, red wine. http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/15511128/

Hey Joe! Back from my trip, and reading your St A's post is making me all weepy I'm not going to be able to make it (for the second year in a row!). The trip and the stress fracture combined just made it impossible for obvious reasons. Working back slowly from the fracture, things are looking up, trying to find a late season half to shoot for.

Ooh, Danielle... now you're talkin... so the fam has a list of race numbers and they can report back my AG place and how far ahead the next guy is. I need to do some reading of the USAT rules to make sure this is sportsmanlike conduct but if it's cool I'd be down! (I think that in road racing you're not allowed to have people pass you pacing or race info.) And I think it'd make things more fun for the fam.

I have had some difficulties with the G3 that I added to my RS800SD setup, although I think I have those under control now. I would definitely agree that their GPS setup has some kinks in it but is servicable. Otherwise I've been very happy with both my W.I.N.D chest strap and foot pod. I've been tempted by the Garmins but so far haven't bit. A GPS just isn't good for trail running!

I don't know how to look at my workout history without downloading to my PC yet (and I've heard you can also set it to take automatic mile splits without hitting the lap button)

You know, this sounds like a great idea for an internet accessible application. - Come up with a series of excercises that can be done in a typical cube. Maybe 15 or so different ones. - Develop web site where person joins and logs in when they start work. Or it could be pre-programmed for specific times of day. - The person could select various excercises they can perform and the app 'pings' them when it's time to do it. - The person then does the routine and logs results. - System keeps track of activity over time and can report total progress, est calories burned etc. - For those of us who can access the internet, the app could send something to thier phone or PDA. - It could also be set up so multiple people from a single work location or anywhere in the world can join a group and compete against one another. Lots of possibilities there.

Another "Introspective Moments by Joe Reger" (ala Deep Thoughts by Jack Handey). Seriously, good stuff, and I always appreciate when you put things on "pause" and pop in some introspection based upon past experience. It's helpful for less young folks like me, as it can help shorten the learning curve re: certain aspects/approaches to training. And your thoughts also underscore the fact that "ramping up" is as much about the "art" of doing so as it is the "science." By the way, speaking of Jack H., this one made me think of Ava...http://www.deepthoughtsbyjackhandey.com/media.asp?file=109

Yep. Intensity is in my training plan this year. However the Active article doesn't address the important role of rest and recovery with those efforts which is also part of my plan. As for my heartrate, it rarely spikes past 160 these days believe it or not. I think this bugs the shit out of the winter base pacers. Deal with it peeps. We're all individuals and need to figure out what works best for our bodies. One size doesn't fit all.

Oh, Bill... you and your logical thinking! You should be a lawyer or something. Paul has moved the bar to 30 min/day while opening the allowed activities. I figure that on off weeks I can phone in a 75 watt ride on the trainer. Plus, I'm pretty realistic that with 2/3 of my life in array (an array of work, family and fitness) I'll likely drop the ball on this competition a good bit sooner than others. But the point is well taken. Rest weeks mean I recover and sometimes that means doing absolutely nothing. How's everything going for you and Sara?

Excellent food for thought Danielle. Yes, they'd have to knock me out to get at my fibers with a needle! I didn't know that ST fibers are smaller, more compact... very good news and may explain the toothpick phenomenon. Oh, and I did win Mr. Olympia in '82 but I was underage so they didn't quote-unquote recognize my achievement. Thanks again for the great insight... it deserves even more discussion before IM LV! Joe

VO2 Max is about 60% genetics. If you were a track and field athelete or a 5k runner than your VO2 max would be important. But for an Ironman what is really important is your Steady State VO2- or what percentage of your VO2 that you can hold for prolonged periods of time (like the race) If you have a 60 VO2 Max and I have a 55, but I can hold 85% of mine and you can only hold 70% of yours, than I will have a better chance at beating you because my muscles are getting more oxygenated blood to them, allowing them to contract faster, and in the presence of oxygen pyruvate won't turn into lactic acid (this a good thing)This is why lactate threshold testing is much more appropriate for Ironman athletes. Type I fibers (slow) are much smaller than Type IIx (fast) so smaller, wirey men typically have a higher percentage of slow twitch fibers. Genetics plays a huge role in this too. Each specific muscle is composed of different fiber types depending on what its role is, so your quads and your chest won't have the same percentages. The only way to have it tested would be to do a muscle biopsy with a BIG needle. Even then you still would have just an estimate based on the particular muscle tested. Given your ability to run 100 miles and the fact that you haven't won Mr. Olympia, I am guessing you are more ST than anything. Training does promote some FT to ST change, and so does weight training. The majority of us are 50/50 and depending on what sports we take up, then we start to see the shift. Elite athletes are people who are born with 90/10 like Alberto Salazar (92% slow twitch!)
